nabotypography | Book Recommendation | Just My Type

nabotypography book recommendation.
Just My Type by Simon Garfield *I think* is my favorite typography book.
I only recently purchased this book after a long period of "Should I?" And I am so glad I did get the book. Even though the book isn't that expensive, I still hate having precious space on my bookshelf being taken up by a book I don't really like. But this book is.. delightful, and it has most definitely brought a smile to my face while I have been reading it.

Blurb from the book (Taken from Amazon):
"Just My Type is not just a font book, but a book of stories. About how Helvetica and Comic Sans took over the world. About why Barack Obama opted for Gotham, while Amy Winehouse found her soul in 30s Art Deco. About the great originators of type, from Baskerville to Zapf, or people like Neville Brody who threw out the rulebook, or Margaret Calvert, who invented the motorway signs that are used from Watford Gap to Abu Dhabi. About the pivotal moment when fonts left the world of Letraset and were loaded onto computers ... and typefaces became something we realised we all have an opinion about. As the Sunday Times review put it, the book is 'a kind of Eats, Shoots and Leaves for letters, revealing the extent to which fonts are not only shaped by but also define the world in which we live."
The book isn't your bog standard book on typography, it is written almost like a story, so it isn't just endless facts listed (which can get pretty tiresome).
This book is really enjoyable to read, if you are interested in typography then you should get it. You only have to look at the good reviews on Amazon to see that there are loads of people that are impressed with this book.

I think this book will be a good read for anyone that is into design, as it can help in giving you enough knowledge to chose a good font for your website, publication article, or even for blogs.

I got my copy from Amazon for just under £7, I got the paperback version which can be viewed here. But if you prefer hardback books you can get it for about £12 also from Amazon.

I only got my copy yesterday, and I am already half way through the book, I really think it is a little gem!

  1. Sounds good – thanks – I've still got my copy on my bookshelf, untouched, but I'll have to start reading it

    1. Oh you should definitely read it. You must be interested in design/type so you will enjoy the book. There are also quite a few typography "jokes" / witty lines, which will either make you smile from humor or make you smile after cringing lol.
